A Day in the Life of a Volunteer
Volunteers work from Monday to Friday. Hours are detailed as follows:
8:30am - be waiting for the students to arrive with a healthy breakfast or lunch already prepared, greet the students and help them settle into their classrooms. Assist the children with their homework, or assign additional practice for the children who don’t have homework. Most of our students struggle with Mathematics and Literacy, so much of our help is targeted towards these areas. 11am - Children wash their hands and volunteers serve a protein-rich snack to all students. Following the meal, the children brush their teeth. 11:30am - Children and volunteers work together to tidy the classrooms, ensuring that all pens, pencils, books, glue, and scissors are put in their proper place, and that the classroom is ready for the afternoon session. 11:45am - The morning session ends. Now volunteers have free time to eat lunch, explore Huaráz, practice Spanish and prepare activities for the afternoon session if you wish. Some volunteers prefer to go to the gym, while others elect to take an afternoon nap. |
2:30pm - The afternoon session begins, following the same format as the morning. Generally, the schools in Huaraz split the day into two with primary students going to school in the morning and the secondary students in the afternoon. Therefore, Seeds supports secondary school students in the morning, and primary school students in the afternoon.
4:30pm - The children have free time, "recreo", where they typically engage international volunteers in a variety of games, play outside or do some colouring. 5:00pm - Children wash their hands and volunteers serve a warm, protein-rich snack to the students. After eating, the children brush their teeth. 5:30pm - The afternoon session ends, and the volunteers work together to tidy the classrooms and prepare the school for the morning session the following day. |
Additional Opportunities
Volunteers are encouraged help teach English classes for local people. This is a great opportunity for local adults to speak with native and non-native English speakers, improve job prospects and learn about other cultures. We have beginners and advanced classes and volunteers can choose which classes to support. The times and days of these classes vary, therefore please contact us for more information.
